The Sustainable Innovation Fund - Round 2

Circular economy based Uninterruptible Power Supply battery system for greener and sustainable remote working (2020)

This project involved research and development across 12 months to improve M-BRIC’s design and demonstrate that it could meet the requirements of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system with regards to safety, efficiency and availability.

During the project, we optimised battery use and management of the system’s in-built AI so that:

  • It could learn from previous usage and charge

  • It could adapt and prioritise output to provide backup power, meet user needs and extend battery life

Improved safety features included:

  • Automatic switching of BRIC to 4V for easy handling by operators

  • Switching the inter-rack voltage drop for easy installation and maintenance

  • Auto voltage charging adjustment based on battery health and status to prolong system life

  • Resettable fuse breakage predictive AI and smart relays at rack and server level
