Catalysing Green Innovation - Strand 2

Lightweight battery system with thermal control and thermal run-away prevention features (2020)

We set out to design an innovative electronic system that allowed for thermal management and diagnostics of batteries on an individual cell-level within M-BRIC. Our improved design would have a low cost thermal sensor attached to each cell for the benefit and optimal performance of the entire battery pack. This system would be ideal for End-of-Life recycling and repurposing, as well as maintenance and servicing.

The project objective was for M-BRIC to serve two functions:

1. Battery cooling and heating within the operating temperature for optimal battery performance and longevity.

2. Preventing thermal runaway and thermal cascading effects during battery cell failure and temperatures outside of the operating temperature.

Ultimately, by the project end we enhanced M-BRIC’s design for long term usage, easy maintenance, and cell replacement to maximise battery pack life and utilisation of individual cells.
